Somewhere deep in the Welland Valley on a warm Sunday afternoon a plan is forming. Recognising the lack of women racing cyclists entering open events Welland Valley CC have found six eager ladies wanting to race. The six are currently sitting with their feet in a swimming pool at their secret training base in the Welland Valley posing for the photos that you can see throughout this press release.
Ladies New Members Liason Officer Gaye Taylor says: “Over the last few years Welland Valley have increased their rider numbers three-fold” (Editors Note: with initiatives like the Go-Ride Clubmark Scheme” aimed at children 12 and under and their Nurture Rides for kids aged 12-16. A comprehensive website has encouraged new members with it’s accessibility of information). “In this membership increase we now have over ten female members and our looking to increase this even more by showing how accessible racing is and how much fun women’s racing can be.”
Ladies Captain Lorna Marlow added: “For 2007 we are looking at targeting the regional time-trials and the National Women’s Circuit Race Series. By entering these and gaining exposure for the club throughout the region hopefully we should attract even more new members to strengthen the ladies area of the club”.
Club Captain Wayne Holton adds: “Women’s Racing is one of the fastest growing areas of the sport and all of Welland Valley CC wants to be a part of making it a success by increasing the rider participation in these events.”
