Vic takes Gold while the future looks bright.
There were numerous outstanding performances by Welland Valley Cycling Club members in the National Cyclo-cross Championships in Sutton Park, Birmingham at the weekend.
In the first event of the weekend Vic Barnett once again showed that age is no barrier as he completely dominated the Over’s 60 year old age category.
The Worlds silver medallist suffered a slight mechanical mishap when he unshipped his chain on the first lap only to regain his composure and ride consistent lap times to beat Philip Cooper by 1min 40 seconds.
Two young ladies showed that they have a bright future are Katie Hubbard and Erin Billington.
Katie started her championship race for Under 14 Girls at a steady pace but once into rhythm of the race she soon started to reel in the riders ahead of her. Her final finishing position of 8th is a fine achievement for a rider who has trained and worked hard throughout the winter.
Erin Billington was contesting the Ladies / Junior Ladies event and was joined by club mate Chloe Parrington.
Both riders produced fine performances on a bumpy technical course. Erin found the going to her likening and rode a strong race just to miss out on her first National medal by finish 4th Junior and 14th Overall. Chloe produced another solid performance to finish 20th.
In the Under 14’s Boys race the Welland Valley had a strong development group of boys racing proudly in club colours. Jake Hubbard, James Garrett and Ben Morris all mastered the circuit and went onto achieve creditable performances.
Jake used his excellent bike handling skills to finish 20th, while James and Ben once again had their own personal battle with James this time beating Ben in 28th and 29th respectfully.
Dominic Toner was the sole club rider in the Boys Under 16’s race. Just as the race was in full flow Dominic had the misfortune to suffer a mechanical that required the youngster to shoulder his bike and run to the next available pit to get a spare bike.
Undeterred Dominic was soon back into the race and battled all the way to the finish line in 42nd place.
Cousins Dean and Nick Barnett contested the Over 40’s championship. Both enjoyed the experience with Dean finishing 77th and Nick 93rd.
