The latest Welland Valley Whizz Kids – George Halls Cycle Centre – youth activity, The Tour de Welland attracted 39 riders.
As the temperature soared into the high 20’s a cows field was transformed into a cycle race track.
The redundant old air base service roads were swept free of cow pats. The start and finish straight was decorated with bunting and a race village complete with a podium was created, the road was daubed with ‘Go for it’, ‘Whizz Kids’ and ‘Sprint’.
Stage 1 for the 8 years and under was a ‘half mile dash’.
With some of the Whizz Kids aged 4 and on bikes with wheels the size of dinner plates the dash for the finish was going to be a great adventure.
With all the riders racing hard the sprint for the finish line was a very close tussle.
Stage 2 for the 8 years and under was an endurance race that would see them complete the ‘Pave de Bosworth’ each lap in the 8 minute race. The racing was as hot as the temperatures as the Whizz Kids let their energy trickle out.

Stage 1 – 9 years Plus was the ‘Low Lands Sprint’
The racers completed one lap of the lower circuit. After an explosive start the riders sailed across the ‘Pave de Bosworth’ and a long line of competitors disappeared out of sight to the next radio controlled check point. As all the riders started to head towards the finish line the jostling began as they hit 500 meters to go. The uphill sprint required an extra explosive effort as all the riders surged across the line.
Stage 2 - 9 years Plus was the ‘Tour Classic’
After a break while the younger riders raced the final stage for the older age group was going to be a big challenge.
All the competitors were eager for a good starting position on the start line and looked focused for the challenge ahead.
As the race started the course led the Whizz Kids over the pave to the foot of the ‘Col du Soar’. Gaps started to appear in the pack as they crested the Col for the long sweeping descent to far corner of the previous Low Land circuit. A very tactical battle ensued as the riders looked at each other as they pasted through the start and finish to see 2 laps to go.
The next lap saw the riders consolidate their position.
On the final ascent of the Col the leading group exploded as riders made constant attacks as they looked to forge a breakaway.
Into the final last kilometre the riders were in one’s and two’s as they battled to cross the finish line after an epic battle of endurance.
