GO WHIZZ RACING @ MISTERTON

East Midlands based Welland Valley Cycling Club promoted their inaugural Go-Ride Racing experience around the splendid grounds of Misterton Hall, near Lutterworth.
The 2 Stage Cyclo-cross consisted of a short sharp time-trial and a bunch cross race around a specially designed circuit that would test the youngsters speed, agility and endurance.
On a perfect Sunday morning the sunshine graced the event as 36 eager young racers signed on, for a majority of the racers this was their first taste of a British Cycling structured event.
First riders into the time keepers stating gate were the Under 8’s. Hugo Sillifant exploded away from the starting gate to set a blistering 2 minutes 50seconds for the one lap effort, a time that would remain unchallenged in his age category. Alexandra Lydall was fastest girl with a time of 3.32.
A special mention for Isabelle Shepherd who rode complete with shopping basket on her handle bars to record 6 minutes 39 seconds in her very first cycling activity.
The Under 10’s Stage 1 was a very tight affair as both Holly Barnett and Ben Hirst could not be split after the time-trial as they both recorded 2 minutes 22 seconds. The battle for third was also a tie when Fraser Ayers and Lewis Daly stopped the timekeepers watch with 2 min 38 sec’s.
Welland Valley Whizz Kid Ross Barnett record a supersonic 1 minute 55 seconds in the Under 12’s event ahead of Georgia Toner 2.31. Joseph Stanford-White was third quickest recording 2.34.
The Under 14’s and 16’s faced two laps of a longer course that included a grass camber descent and tough grass climb.
Quickest Under 14 was Louis Killworth with a time of 5 mins 42 seconds ahead of Jack Roginski – 6.29 and Ria Mobbs 6.42,
Jake Hubbard mastered the two lap effort to record 5 mins 22 seconds. In second place was his sister Katie who stopped the clock in 6.18 seconds.
After a short break Stage 2 commenced as the Under 8’s, 10’s and 12’s all started together on the smooth tarmac start and finishing straight.
As the pack headed up the shale climb and along a fast track the young racers entered a technical woodland descent. Onto the tarmac the riders where soon back in view.
Hugo once again dominated the Under 8’s as they completed 3 laps. Behind it was a great race between Alexandra, Jakob Warren, Nicholas Wood and Luke Shepherd.
Warren moved through to finish second on the stage behind Hugo.
Overall Hugo won from Jakob with Alexandra third.
The Under 10’s proved to be another tight affair as Holly set the early pace, Fraser glued to her back wheel with Jamie, recovering from a slow start, beginning to reel the duo in.
As the race entered the final lap of four, Fraser launched an attack just as Jamie was about to latch on. Fraser won the second stage and Jamie beat Holly in the sprint for second.
The overall placing were tight and it required the TT times to be revisited as both Holly and Fraser were equal on points. Holly was declared the winner after recording the faster time. 3rd overall also required the judges to look at TT times. Ben Hirst snatched the final step on the podium from Jamie.
Ross Barnett wasted no time in breaking clear in his age group, Under 12’s, as they faced a five lap race. Oliver Haines found the longer race to his likening as he charged through the pack to finish second in the Cyclo-cross race.
Overall victory went to Ross; second place went to Georgia ahead of Oliver. Both riders were equal on overall points but Georgia recoded the faster TT time.
The Under 14’s and 16’s raced for 20 minutes plus one lap.
Louis, Jack, Jade and Ria Mobbs set the early pace before Louis gradually eased away from Jack followed by Jade.
James Owen and William Stone both rode consistent laps as they mastered the Misterton course.
After a tough race Louis took the overall Under 14’s win from Jack and Ria.
Jake Hubbard dominated the Under 16’s and cruised to a fine victory ahead of Katie. Daniel Jordan and Jasmine Gandy both produced a gutsy performance to finish 3rd and 4th
After a great morning of racing it was time for the presentation of Sky goodies and Go-Ride medals.
Presenting the prizes was Jenny Gretton, East Midlands Regional Events Officer
Many thanks to Mrs Craven for her kind permission to use Misterton Hall, and numerous volunteers who ensured the event was a massive success.

British Cycling has launched Go-Ride Racing, a new initiative in partnership with Sky designed to encourage more young people into entry-level bike racing. This latest addition to Go-Ride, a cycling development initiative for young people, provides a stepping-stone between club cycle coaching sessions and regional level cycling competitions.
Many young riders find it daunting to enter their first race and compete against more experienced riders who are often equipped with the latest bikes and specialist equipment. Go-Ride Racing offers riders under the age of 16 the opportunity to compete in a real race environment against cyclists of the same age and ability.
Once novice racers have gained confidence, they are encouraged to make the step up to open regional competition.
In 2010/11 Welland Valley Whizz Kids – George Halls Cycle Centre - will promote a programme of exciting racing opportunities for young people at Misterton Hall, Lutterworth.
The first event being GO WHIZZ RACING @ MISTERTON on Sunday 22 August 2010
